The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Website Design

This is our personal check list of web design features that can make your site look great and pull in lots of traffic, features that are likely to turn off viewers before they even see your content and features that just look plain ugly.

Good

  • Pages that download quickly.
  • Clean professional design with plenty of space.
  • Great balance between images and text.
  • A clear hierarchy of information.

Bad

  • Auto playing sound and videos. There is no better way to embarrass somebody who is viewing your website at work!
  • Selling everything to everybody.
  • Having to download specialist software to view parts of the site.
  • No Sign up area to capture customer data.
  • Confusing site navigation.

Ugly

  • Pages that only look okay in one browser.
  • Pages that can’t be displayed properly on a mobile device.
  • Lots of adverts and pop ups.
  • Flashing text.
  • Busy, distracting backgrounds.
  • Sites that lack personality and consistent branding.
