Facebook has published a list of the UK’s most popular news stories of 2011. The list has been compiled by taking each of the news stories that have been shared on Facebook by the UK’s top media outlets, (the BBC, the Guardian, the Sun, the Daily Mail etc.) and ranking them in terms of the number of clicks they received this year. This list is testament to the fact that bizarre and eye catching headlines trump significant content every time.
Perhaps the most outrageous headline in the top 20 came from the Daily Mail. Their highest ranked story was the Pulp Fiction- esque, ‘Robber who broke into hair salon is beaten by its black-belt owner and kept as a sex slave for three days… fed only Viagra’. Another good example is ‘Drunk Swedish Elk Found in Apple Tree near Gothenburg’.
